Indirect Bonded Restorations. Part 1: Structural Analysis, Isolation and Caries & Crack Management

47 minutes 0.75 hrs CPD/CE

The first lecture in the indirect bonded restorations series by Dr Amir Ghanem. He reframes the direct-versus-indirect decision through a six-parameter structural analysis, then covers rubber dam isolation, objective caries removal and crack dissection within the peripheral seal and central stop zones.

About this lecture

Indirect Bonded Restorations. Part 1: Structural Analysis, Isolation and Caries & Crack Management

Dr Amir Ghanem opens his three-part series on indirect bonded restorations by shifting the direct-versus-indirect question from “when” to “why”. He uses the lever-arm effect and stress distribution to explain why deep cavities beyond 5 mm and cracked teeth often favour an indirect approach. This lecture covers preoperative structural analysis, rubber dam isolation, objective caries removal and cavity engineering, with every decision framed around the indirect endpoint. Using case examples and video footage, Dr Ghanem also demonstrates a structured method for visualising and dissecting cracks.

What you'll learn

Learning Aims & Objectives

Understand why cavity depth, the lever-arm effect and stress distribution make indirect bonded restorations more predictable than direct composite in deep and cracked posterior teeth.
Apply the six-parameter preoperative structural analysis, vitality, marginal ridges, cusp thickness, missing cusps, cracks and the patient, to decide between a direct restoration, cuspal coverage and an indirect approach.
Learn a planned rubber dam isolation workflow, including clamp and sheet selection, anaesthesia planning, inversion, clamp repositioning and ligature ties.
Identify the peripheral seal zone and central stop zone boundaries and apply them to objective caries removal and crack dissection without causing pulp exposure.
