Creating Natural Optical Effects with Composite Layering & Tints
Dr Prjeen Bazeed presents an overview of composite layering for direct anterior restorations, built around the optical behaviour of the natural tooth. She explains how enamel, dentin and composite transmit, scatter and reflect light differently, and how translucency, opacity and layer thickness shape value, chroma and the final result. Dr Bazeed frames layering as three progressive levels of optical control, from a simplified mono-shade approach through structural dentin-enamel layering to full optical characterisation. She discusses the optical effects that give an anterior restoration its vitality, such as the halo effect and opalescence, and the restrained use of internal tints. Four clinical cases illustrate the approach in turn, from a single body-shade veneer to multi-layer restorations, showing how these optical concepts translate into anterior restorative practice.
