Summary – What is Deep Margin Elevation (DME)?

Deep Margin Elevation (DME) is the technique by which the restorative margin of a deep box preparation is raised to the level, or above the level, of the gingival margin.

This process requires use of gold standard rubber dam isolation, and commonly requires complex matricing. There are many benefits to DME as an alternative to crown lengthening surgery. For example, DME allows isolation to be more easily achieved for indirect restoration cementation, and removal of excess composite used during cementation can be carried out more efficiently and with greater accuracy.
